What is Strangles?
Strangles is a bacterial infection affecting a horse’s respiratory system. Early signs include fever, dullness, and loss of appetite, followed by nasal discharge and swollen glands.
It can take up to 21 days for symptoms to appear. Some horses show mild signs but remain infectious. While rarely fatal, it can cause significant distress and disruption.
How Does It Spread?
Strangles spreads through direct contact with infected horses or indirectly via contaminated equipment, surfaces, water, clothing, and hands.
It is not airborne, but can survive in the environment depending on conditions. For example, it may persist in water for up to 30 days.
What Should You Do?
- Notify the horse owner immediately and advise contacting a vet.
- Disinfect all equipment thoroughly using approved products.
- Wash and disinfect hands, boots, and clothing between visits.
- Consider scheduling visits to affected yards at the end of the day.
Prevention
- Quarantine new horses for at least three weeks.
- Maintain strict hygiene between horses and yards.
- Monitor horses regularly for early signs of illness.
- Encourage open communication and responsible reporting.
- Stay updated with local disease alerts.
